Baby nurse vs Postpartum Doula... What is the difference? Do I need one?

Chances are you have heard of baby nurses. Maybe you have a friend who used one after giving birth or your mom did and thinks it would be of great service to you once your little bundle arrives. Baby nurses offer information on newborns and will help you with all things baby related-feeding, changing, bathing, baby laundry, sleeping and nursery organization. If you are seeking a more holistic, family-centric model, you may want to consider hiring a Postpartum Doula.

Most people have heard of baby nurses, but when I say I’m a postpartum doula I get a lot of puzzled faces. Part of my role in this profession is to educate the public as to what we do and how we help serve. Baby nurses or Newborn Care Specialists and Postpartum Doulas both offer support to new parents, but the focus of the support is very different. Baby nurses focus on the well being of the baby while Postpartum Doulas focus on the well being of the mother and whole family to ensure the entire unit is functioning at it’s best.

Postpartum doulas are trained and certified professionals who provide in home care for new families. Our main role is to support new mothers and partners so that they can feel confident caring for their babies. We ‘mother the mother’ which means to take care of her, nurture her both physically and emotionally.

Postpartum Revolution Doulas provide the following to our new moms:

  • Provide evidence based information to parents about feeding, baby care, recovery and newborns.

  • Recognize the signs of perinatal mood disorders and can refer to you the appropriate provider.

  • Offer education and resources on newborns and postpartum and hold space for recovery and transformation.

  • Smooth the re-entry to the home, whether it’s your first or fourth baby.

  • Meal prep, household organization and other basic day to day responsibilities so that you can focus on your baby.

  • Feeding goals, breast or bottle and help you navigate the ins and outs of feeding, pumping and formula so that you can make a smooth transition back into work.

  • Offer day and night hours, giving you the ability to get customized support for your family.

We make sure a mama’s physical needs are met. Does she have enough to eat and drink? Does she have food that is easily accessible and nourishing? Has she been able to have some time for herself and get a shower and a nap in? Is she taking care of herself so that she can heal properly? It may sound like these are such simple, obvious things, but when you have a newborn even something as small as making a sandwich can seem like an insurmountable task!

We listen with non-judgemental, caring ears. We want to hear your birth story and help you process it. We answer your questions, help you to find the right support and encourage you in your parenting journey. At Postpartum Revolution, believe that you are worthy of a fully supported postpartum experience!
